Title: Chai Jin in Death Row
DocumentNature: Engraving
Repository: Turandot
Color: Black and white
Caption: Chai Jin falls in a trap in Gaotang Prefecture 柴進失陷高唐州
Topic: Prison and fetters
Description: Chai JIn, one leader in the "Water Margins" bandit gang, whose judicial misfortunes after he killed one Yin Tianxi, are related in chap. 52-54 in the French version by Jacques Dars. After being harshly beaten, Chai Jin "had his neck yoked with the 25 pounds cangue reserved for convicts condemned to death, and was jailed in a dungeon". The picture shows Chai Jin in death row, recognizable to the door firguring a monster jaws. The artist might have taken pleasure in condensing (murderer) Chai Jin's cangue and (victim) Yin Tianxi's coffin, which are in turn mentioned in the text. This cangue and coffin might also be compared with oft-represented and evoked torture-beds.
