 Résumé:   In this autobiography, Thomas De Quincey relates how he became an opium-addict so as to cure his physical sufferings.and how his childhood and youthful experiences have been transformed, under the influence of opium, into symbolical dreams. The euphoric reveries of the early stage of his addiction turn in the later stages into appaling nigthmares  such as these “ Awful Asiatic scenes ”.
 Note: The first edition was printed in 1822, and an elarged version was publisehd in 1856.
