Biographical_Information: William SAUNDERS, commercial photographer, British; active in Shanghai, c. 1862-1887, died 1892. Advertized in 1871 a series of 50 types and scenes of China which include judiciary subjects. Many are duplicated, either by repeat shots of the same scenes with slight variants (as with a * beheading), or several years apart as the need arose and the market allowed. The series was, and still is, extremely successful in creating an image of traditional Chinese customs, often mistaking the place and circumstances and conveying a vision of eternal China. They were a clear inspiration for many later scenes by (Chinese) photographers from the 1800s on.
