Title: Lingchied body in Norman
DocumentNature: Book illustration
Glass: Negative
Support: Paper
Mono: Monoscopic
Repository: Turandot
Color: Black and white
Caption: China: "Death by the thousand cuts".
Particulars: Norman provided the reader with a possibility to withdraw this page: "This page is perforated at the side in order to be detached, without mutilating the volume, by any reader who would rather not keep such an unpleasant illustration of the condition of contemporary China". This device will be later employed by Commandant Harfeld for the same purposes, in his Opinions d'un Barbare d'Occident (q.v.).
Topic: Lingchi 凌遲
Description: This is the photograph of a lingchi performed in Canton, on the market place of Matou, ca. 1890. The photo has been taken after the execution, and secretly, with a hiden camera. This is likely to be the very first photographic rendering of lingchi, and Norman was the first to publish it in Europe (it had appeared in 1892 in a Hong kong journal).
Keyword: lingchi; human remnants; tear-off chart
