Résumé: The most complete translation of 1740 Da Qing lüli, which Annam Emperor Gia-long published almost unchanged. Philastre's work is amazing, as he translated not only the Statutes (lü), but also the sub-statutes (li) included in the Annnamese version; he moreover gives outlines of the Chinese sub-statutes not included, and a first-rate choice of Ming and Qing commentaries. His personal comments are generally illuminating, and witnesses of a rare erudition and open-mindedness. The weak point is in the using of transliteration from the Vietnamese, and a quite profuse translation, aiming at "reproducing Chinese syntax", shortcomings that can be expediently palliated by using concurrently Boulais' translation.
