Description: This is a rare view of the Jianxing guan 監刑官, the magistrate in charge of supervising legal execution of death penalty in behalf of the Board of Punishments. It is very likely linked to one of the last lingchi executions that were abundantly photographed, but we do not know which of them. The magistrate should be an important member of the board, and he has aides with him, all of them sitting under a tent. The would-be executed passed by the opening, and answered to the spelling of their name and crime. The "Lemasle" Diary has details on this proceeding, and a photo shows the same tent from the outside.
