Résumé: General statements on executions practiced in Imperial China (lingchi and beheading) illustrated with photographs, with some very concrete details possibly held from eyewitnesses. The writer was probably not one of them however. As for Lemasle, the owner and author of the album in which this set is inserted, he was a soldier from colonial garrison in French Vietnam, and he did not come to China before 1910, that is five years after the abolition of the punishments he describes. If he is the man signing "votre serviteur", dressed as a Band leader, he might have attended the last execution by lingchi, and gathered documents and hearsay in the Tianjin garrison, where most of the photographic documentation on the last execution circulated. His comments were written in 1908, as he alludes to an article published "il y a trois ans" (three years ago), which effectively appeared in a journal dated 5 october 1905.
