Comment: Cruel and unusual modes of execution have long been associated with tyrants in Chinese historiography. The invention of the Snakes’ pit (chaipen 虿盆) is attributed by 16th Century novel Fengshen yanyi 封神演to Shang Dynasty’s last ruler King Zhou’s vixen concubine Daji 妲己. Daji likewise makes King Zhou inventing the burning pillar paoluo 炮烙(chapter 6) in "Fox spirit DAJI invents Paoluo torture", cutting open the bellies of pregnant women after guessing the sex of the embryo (chapter 89), etc.
